The partnership with FatHopes Energy includes six (6) participating Sunway Hotels & Resorts in Malaysia – Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, Sunway Pyramid Hotel and Sunway Clio Hotel located in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, Sunway Putra Hotel in Kuala Lumpur city centre and Sunway Hotel Georgetown and Sunway Hotel Seberang Jaya in Penang.
"By partnering with FatHopes Energy, we are assured of not only the conversion of the used cooking oil into an ecologically beneficial energy stream but also to the environment, which has become a priority to the business while being mindful towards the efficiency of our operations and stakeholders value," said Mr. Colin Yeoh, Sunway Hotels & Resorts’ Group Director of Food & Beverage.
Sunway Hotels & Resorts reported that at minimum fifty percent (50%) of its used cooking oil is expected to be recycled into biodiesel. "Cooking oil in the hotel is used for various methods of cooking including as part of an ingredient in dishes and not just for deep frying. However, with proper recycling, data monitoring and collection now in place with FatHopes Energy, our Hotels can expect the percentage to increase in the long term," added Mr. Yeoh.
"We are honored by the stewardship and commitment of Sunway Hotels & Resorts as it is a milestone for the groups sustainability journey and an exemplary initiative that should be adopted across the country. This long-term partnership will also help raise awareness and spur other related industries to take this significant step in creating a sustainable future with us," said Mr. Vinesh Sinha, Chief Executive Officer and Founder, FatHopes Energy.
Without improper collection, fats, oil and grease goes right down the drain – where it used to generations ago. Used cooking oil recycling helps stop oil from being disposed of in drains, which can clog sewage lines due to the build-up of fats. Around the world and in Malaysia, this issue has become a real concern. As part of the greater whole, it makes a huge difference when consumers and establishments dispose of used cooking oil in an ecologically friendly way.
This initiative by Sunway Hotels & Resorts is part of the #sunwayforgood movement, which is Sunway’s commitment towards a sustainable environment, economy and society. Since the launch of the Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development at Sunway University via a USD 10 million gift by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation to the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network in December 2016, Sunway Group has been powering their 12 business units to develop business strategies that are aligned to the SDGs.
Committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), Sunway Hotels & Resorts continues to align its business model, operating strategies and corporate culture with sustainable practices and solutions in line with the SDG agenda. All Sunway Hotels & Resorts’ 11 hotels and resorts are fully committed and have adopted SDG2 that focuses on Zero Hunger and SDG12 on Responsible Consumption and Production; fostering a better future for the communities in which Sunway builds, serves and lives.
Sunway Hotels & Resorts’ on-going #ZeroFoodWastage programme is an initiative where surplus food is collected daily from its food and beverage establishments to feed the urban poor. The Hospitality Group’s Soapful project repurposes used soap bars from all its hotels and thereafter distributed to selected beneficiaries for their personal use and also to be sold as part of their respective social enterprise programmes at charity sales, community markets and other social platforms. Other sustainable initiatives include turning food waste into compost, linen recycling programme, the no-straw campaign and reducing single-use plastic.
